Lets take a WALK with Mike Collier

What is WALK? Well let me explain, WALK stands for Walking, Art, Landscape and Knowledge. It is a research centre at the University of Sunderland exploring how we creatively engage with the world as we walk through it.

Mike Collier's talk really came to my interest, I was intrigued in the creative way he explores the relationship between culture and nature through a detailed ecological study of local environments. Birds seem to be a strong interest of Mike's and the way he expresses and presents their songs in his work is amazing. He uses screen prints, music, digital prints, relief sculpture, poetry and glass.

"To know the world is to sing of it in a melody of words"- Merleow Ponty

Singing the world is this beautiful chandelier sound piece created by the inspiration of the Dawn Chorus. It is a choir of 16 birds heard early one morning is my favourite piece of Mike's work. It is created with Berosillicate glass and is installed in a darkened room so the focus is more on the sound of the piece playing in the installation of the piece. It is also a development from the 16 screen prints of the bird songs which I think is beautiful. Mike's work is something I would consider using in my own projects and even trying lights and sounds.
